Economic growth slowed to 0.3 per cent in first quarter of the year as shoppers stopped spending

THE brakes have been slammed on the economy by nervous shoppers who have stopped spending, official figures have revealed.

GDP only increased by 0.3% in the first three months of the year, more than half the 0.7% growth rate in the final quarter of 2016.
